Dear Friends

Welcome to the 'Flowers for Your Life' homepage and thank you for dropping in at this site.  This is coming to you from Hiroshima, Japan.

I have been studying Ikebana, Art of Japanese flower arranging, for almost 46 years. During those years, I have come in contact with many foreign people and cultures.  I worked for an airline company and flew all over the world in the early '70s. I lived in the United States on and off for seven years till '80s. I am now holding an Ikebana class in Hiroshma and Osaka for both of Japanese and foreign students. Thus, I have been in many cross-cultural environments.  Such experience has naturally led myself to think about what the characteristics of the Japanese culture are.

I write a newsletter to the students in my class.  The topics of the newsletter range from Ikebana materials to everyday life but its viewpoint remains the same, namely the 'Japanese culture'.  While it is written for my students, I believe it is also interesting for some other people.  I hope you enjoy this page.

Sincerely
Eiko Suzuki

<IKEBANA: Japanese way of flower arranging >

Ikebana is different from handcraft-like arts from which we gain some resulting articles.  In Ikebana, we aim at acquiring skills to make nice arrangements by using various kinds of materials. To accomplish this purpose, repeated practice with various materials and careful attention to the best use of those materials are very important.   As a result, it takes some time to acquire such skills.    If you like to do ikebana and your stay in Japan is limited in time, I recommend that you take it up as soon as possible. Ikebana classes are available as shown below.

Instructor: Dr. Eiko Suzuki / Master Instructor of Ohara School of Ikebana

Lessons are conducted totally in English.

Contact: eiko@hbs.ne.jp

The instructor is the first Doctor of Philosophy who acquired a Ph.D. on the study of ikebana.  Further details can be obtained from the Japanese Wikipedia.

Ikebana lesson in English

Group lesson courses for Ikebana are offered in English. Each lesson begins with an actual demonstration arrangement. The students acquire skills by duplicating the demonstration with the instructor's advice. They also take home the materials and rearrange the Ikebana for further study and enjoyment.

Photos from the regular class are here.

On the last day of the each course we display the arrangements to the public.  The students do all works by themselves with the help of the instructor from selecting flowers and a container  to arranging them.

Photos from the occasion can be seen here.
