@I have been teaching ikebana to people from abroad since 1983. Thanks to such activities, I gained many nice and warm friends from all over the world.  Here are photos of some of those friends.

September, 2003

Dear ikebana friends,
Firstly I would like to thank you Eiko-san for the certificate from the headmaster of the Ohara school, I am very honoured and now will work even harder to apply the rules when I do an arrangement. I think I will need some e-mail help.
I have loved our weekly class and looked forward to learning about this Japanese art with you all and especially spending time with such a great teacher. I have gained a small insight into the Japanese culture and its history through your stories and great teaching.
Thank you all for your friendship and the fun and laughter we have shared together. I hope to continue talking with you by e-mail and will continue to practice my ikebana to try and highlight the beauty of the dish you all so kindly gave me.
Best wishes,
Cath

Saying farewells is very hard whenever a   student must leave Japan.

It was sad that Susan and her lovely family left Hiroshima on one morning in August.  Susan had learned Ikebana eagerly and she could get the certificate as an instructor  from the headmaster. She left me a dream that someday  I can visit and see my grand-students  in the US. You can see how much deep Susan understands the heart of Ikebana from her message shown below. Thank you, Susan. Wishing you a great life!

When I first started Ikebana, I didnft know what to expect ? Something like western flower arranging only with fewer flowers, I thought. I was surprised to find out that there were rules to follow, reasons for everything that was done and much meaning behind the arrangement-actually kind of scientific. I quickly grew to love Ikebana because the arrangement enhances the beauty of leaves and branches as well as flowers. Ikebana shows you how to appreciate the beauty of nature and the seasons. It is also a lesson in Japanese culture. Eiko is such a wonderful person and sensei - she makes the class an enjoyable learning experience. Ikebana class is so much more than a class. It is a fun time with friends, a time for meditation with nature, and being in the class feels like being in a big family. Thank you, Eiko, for your teachings and your friendship.

Love,

Susan Gutowski
